[Hot Spot X]

Hot Spot X is a modern remake of an old Mac OS Classic game called Hot Spot. You have a game board that consists of four concentric rings around a center spot (check out the screenshots). You also have 32 game tiles consisting of two tiles each of every combination of four colors and four symbols (2 x 4 x 4 = 32). The object of the game is to place a tile in that center spot by working your way in from the outer rings by followingc certain rules:
  1. Tiles cannot match their neighbors in symbol or color.
  2. Tiles in the inner rings must match one of the parent tiles they are connected to by color and the other by symbol.
To date, I have not been able to complete a game yet but I've gotten pretty darn close.

.:Requirements:.
Mac OS X 10.3 or better.

.:Download:.
HotSpotX.zip

.:Extras:.
These are tile sets contributed by other players: To use them, just unzip them and put them in your "Extra Tiles" folder. If you have a tile set you'd like to share with the world, please e-mail me and let me know.

.:History:.
[20 May 2006 - v1.22]
Fixed: Bonus points for a perfect game not awarded when applicable.
Keyboard shortcuts now usable when presented with a dialog sheet to start a new game, end the current game, or continue with the current game (which appears when you've run out of moves). Basically, instead of say, pressing the button to start a new game, you can use command-N and so on.
Forgot to mention the score penalty for undoing moves. If anyone has an opinion about whether there should be one or if it should be less, please feel free to e-mail me.

[27 April 2006]
I've made Hot Spot X more color-blind friendly by repackaging the archive with a tile set that should help people that are red-green color blind (in addition to the grey scale tile set already included by default).

[04 April 2006 - v1.21]
Adjusted online check to be performed once a week instead of every time the game is launched.
Added a background graphic for the score display.

[27 Feb 2006 - v1.2]
Fixed: Difficulty level not properly applied between launches of the game.
Fixed: Setting the difficulty level to something other than Normal and then setting it back and starting a new game would prevent the player from selecting the tiles that the other difficulty level would hide.
Updated the documentation to include the scoring table (I can't believe I left that out!)
Points earned (or lost) for each move now displayed.
Updated the menu items for saving and loading to be more consistent with other applications and to be easier to use (e.g., now, once a game is saved, Cmd-S will automatically save the game without opening a file save dialog).
Added an online check to see if there's an updated version of the game available as well as providing a menu item to perform the check manually.
Added button to the high scores panel for resetting the high scores.
Window title now displays the name used when saving or opening a previously saved game.
High scores window now highlights the last score added to the table.
Added a drawer that displays the pieces that haven't been played yet.
Added a submenu for picking a different tile set as well as a couple extra tile sets.
Finally broke down and added a donation-nag sheet.

[29 Jan 2006 - v1.12]
Fixed: the game would crash when you had less than four tiles to place on the board.
Fixed: the high scores window would always pop up after a game, whether or not the score actually qualified as a high score.

[24 Jan 2006 - v1.11]
Doh! I'm an idiot. I left in some test code by accident which killed the game when the first tile was placed.

[15 Jan 2006 - v1.1]
Due to compilation issues with Xcode, OS X 10.2 is no longer supported.
Added loading and saving of games.
Added menu items that go to http://www.malarkeysoftware.com and the donation and contact pages.
The cursor now changes based on where the mouse pointer is and what the player is doing.
Renamed the "Easy" and "Medium" difficulty levels to "Normal" and "Moderate".
When the game ends due to no more moves available, the sheet that appears now explains the options left to the player as well as including buttons to start a new game or end the current game.
Replaced the "No more moves" sound with a better one.

[6 June 2005 - v1.0]
Initial release.
